Kolkata: Drug companies and their customers have come under fire in the wake of a recent incident involving the drug giant Viagra in the UK.
The issue was highlighted in a public hearing in the United Kingdom, where the FDA said that a "severe adverse reaction" to the drug Viagra caused a "dangerous drop in blood pressure" after the drug's manufacturer reduced its prescription coverage.
The FDA said the drug's manufacturer, Pfizer, had decided to "remain liable" in the event the drug's manufacturer has discontinued its drug, but the drug's licence remains on the company's premises and the company may wish to appeal.
The company has not yet issued a response to the FDA and was not given an opportunity to respond to the media.
The incident occurred in January last year, when the company had a drug that Pfizer had launched for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. It had also been reported that the company was selling the Viagra for a fraction of the price compared to similar treatments.
The company's licence was subsequently terminated and its licence for Pfizer's Viagra expired, it said.
Viagra's manufacturer, Pfizer, is listed as an individual in the US to protect its product, but has not yet given a reason for the action.

The drug brand, which carries the drug for erectile dysfunction, is requiring orders for Viagra, Cialis and Levitra that are not covered by insurance.
In a statement, CVS spokesman John Smith said the company will take the matter on "an expanded basis" and will "immediately address and remove any remaining orders for all three of these drugs from the online marketplace."

Men in the UK will be able to buy Viagra over the counter after consulting with a pharmacist and without a prescription for the first time today.
ViagraConnect manufacturer, Pfizer, estimates more than a fifth of men aged over 18 in Britain suffer from erectile dysfunction, but almost half of those over 40 have not sought medical help.
The erectile dysfunction drug will be available in 14,000 stores across Britain and via pharmacy websites.
The tablets will be available exclusively from Boots until 10 April.
Those aged 18 and over will be able to buy the tablets following a conversation with a pharmacist or after filling out an online form. Men can ask to speak to a pharmacist in a private consultation room if preferred.
The pharmacists will determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine and potential side effects. They will advise men to consult with their doctor no less than six months after buying Viagra so that any potential underlying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease can be investigated.
A Boots spokesperson said that the man affected by erectile dysfunction should buy the drug themselves wherever practically possible.
Men with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure, strokes or those taking certain other medicines, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
A four-pack of the tablets will cost £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99.
